A popular and helpful restorative option that patients can benefit from is porcelain crowns. Compared to fillings, which only cover a small portion of your tooth, the crown covers the entire visible portion of it. Once it’s completely healed, the crown acts as the tooth’s new outer, protective surface.
If a tooth is broken, chipped, or cracked to a point where a filling won’t be able to provide enough protection, a dental crown is used and put in its place. This gives your tooth a protective shell to shield away the damaged or decayed part in order to strengthen the areas. Not only will it cover and save your tooth, it will also help restore it back to its original shape! Crowns can come in different materials, but porcelain is generally used to give them the look and feel of the rest of your natural teeth.
How it’s done
During your first visit, your restorative dentist in Victoria TX will take impressions of your smile and reshape your tooth to fit the incoming crown. The reshaping includes removing a small portion of your tooth in order for the crown to fit properly. After the reshaping, we take an impression of your tooth and have it sent out to a dental laboratory to make your crown. Until then, we provide you with a temporary crown to protect your damaged tooth.
When your permanent crown is finished and is returned to our office, we’ll remove your temporary one and carefully place in the new one, ensuring that it fits comfortably and naturally, is the same shade of white as your other teeth, and feels as if it’s not even there!
